Behind the Scenes in the Studio: Relay Shop Architecture + Design

We come to work not just for the location, but for the incredible people and exciting projects that inspire us every day. While we truly appreciate our studio space at 298 Seminole in the heart of Athens, Georgia, it’s the collaboration with our team and the creativity of our projects that fuels our passion.

A Day in Our Studio

Our daily routine is a blend of studio time, computer work, phone calls, client meetings, contractor discussions, and everything in between. Meetings are vital—they propel our projects forward, helping us navigate through challenges and refine our concepts. We strive for a balance between scheduled meetings and productive work sessions, typically holding meetings midweek. This structure allows us to dedicate Mondays and Fridays to focused studio work.

Daily Communication

Effective communication is key in our workflow. We engage with clients, contractors, and each other every day, holding debriefing sessions to ensure everyone is on the same page. These sessions allow us to review previous meetings, discuss next steps, and address any potential obstacles that may arise.

The Art of Drawing

Drawing is a significant part of our creative process. It’s where we bring ideas to life on paper, working with site plans, existing and new floor plans, massing studies, and elevations. The conceptual planning phase is particularly exciting for us, as it allows for free expression with pen and paper. We often use trash paper to explore various ideas, understanding that not every concept will work, but each one brings us closer to the right solution.

Before presenting concepts to clients, we refine our ideas through multiple iterations, ensuring that what we propose is both functional and within budget.

At Relay Shop Architecture + Design, our commitment to collaboration and creativity is what makes our work fulfilling and enjoyable. We invite you to join us on this journey of design and innovation.
